LA PURISIMA MISSION STATE HISTORIC PARK: (805) 733-1303, 2295 Purisima Rd., Lompoc. Recognized as the most fully restored Mission, it is peacefully nestled in over 1800 surrounding acres of preserved “early California”. Walk through the over 37 restored rooms, see the livestock, farms and aqueducts of the period or walk along the many miles of hiking trails. Daily Tours. Parking Fees.
LOST MISSION: Visit the original site of the mission, which was destroyed by earthquake in 1812.
It is located at the south end of F Street.
LOMPOC MUSEUM: (805) 736-3888, 200 South H Street, Lompoc.
Learn about the archaeology and history of the Lompoc Valley and explore the world of the Chumash Indians. See the fossil of an ancient porpoise, recently discovered in the hills above Lompoc. Open 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. on Sat. and Sun. Donation.
CYPRESS ART GALLERY: (805) 737-1129, 119 East Cypress, Lompoc (In park across street from museum). The Lompoc Valley Art Association’s Gallery showcases the outstanding local talent which includes nationally know names. Open 11:00am to 4:30pm daily. Closed Monday.
LOMPOC MURALS PROJECT: Scattered in Lompoc. Pick up map/brochure in lobby. Talented artists have created over 20 murals around our town depicting the history and beauty of the Lompoc Valley, industry, and people. Makes for a nice drive to explore Lompoc or a casual walk downtown.
ITALIAN STONE PINES: Planted during the early 1930’s, this stand has received global recognition. Visitors are encouraged to enjoy their beauty and walk along their shaded path. The pines are located between H Street and Locust Street. Our trees have an estimated value in excess of 3 million dollars. They have been classified as one of the healthiest and most beautiful stands of Stone Pines in the world.
VIETNAM VETERANS MEMORIAL: Emplaced at the rear lawn of River Park, the Lompoc Vietnam Veterans Memorial offers quiet honor and remembrance of those fourteen young men of Lompoc Valley who gave their lives in service of their nation during the Vietnam War – and to those of our community who served throughout the duration of America’s conflict in the Southeast Asia and Pacific theatre of the war.
FARMERS MARKET: A variety of fresh produce, flowers, honey and herbs are sold every Friday from 3:00 to 7:00 PM at the corner W. Ocean Avenue and South I Street.
OCEAN PARK: Take Ocean Avenue west to Ocean Park beach access road. Daylight hours Saturday and Sunday only. Our beautiful coastline, from Gaviota to Pismo, is in its natural state and protected for us to enjoy. You’ll find our unspoiled coastal wildlife, rolling sand dunes, and wide beaches. At the parking lot, there are picnic tables, B-B-Q’s and restrooms. Enjoy a relaxing walk on the beach. Swimming can be hazardous. Take a jacket the winds can pick up quickly, and a camera for the great views and bird-watching.
WINERIES: The Mediterranean climate of the central coast makes this one of the finest wine grape growing regions in California. Visit some of the over two dozen wineries within an hours drive of Lompoc. Pick up a map and brochure in our lobby.
JALAMA BEACH COUNTY PARK: (805) 736-6316, 20 miles southwest of Lompoc. Take Hwy. 1 south to Jalama Road, right to end of road. Originally a Chumash Indian settlement this 28 acre park is just north of Point Conception and offers surf fishing, sailboarding, surfing, beachcombing, picnicking, barbecues, and camping. Whales can be spotted in February and March and September thru November. Birdwatching and rockhounding is fun all year. Try the world famous “Jalama Burger” at the general store. Day use. Fee.
CHUMASH INDIAN CASINO: (800) 728-9997, 3 miles east of Solvang on Hwy. 246 in Santa Ynez. Visit California’s newest Indian casino. “The best place to play from LA to the Bay”. Operated by the Santa Ynez Band of Chumash Indians, you’ll find it’s 29,000 square foot building holds a 14 table Card Room, a 1,300 seat Bingo Hall and 400 electric gaming devices.
LAKE CACHUMA: An hour east of Lompoc offers camping, fishing and wild life viewing.
SOLVANG: The Danish Capital of the US. It is a 30 minute drive east. It has quaint shops, restaurants and bakeries to browse through.
VANDENBERG AIR FORCE BASE : Tours of the base.10am to noon the second and fourth Wednesdays of the month. To show the past, present and future of the base;s rocket launch and missle test role. People must call two weeks in advance to make reservations. Reservations require names, social security numbers and hometowns. Upon arrival visitors must have two forms of identification.
